You’ll start this tour at a South African classic: Meerlust. Long recognized for producing world-class wines, Meerlust Estate has been the pride of the Myburgh family since 1756. Be sure to taste one of Meerlust’s most renowned wines, the Rubicon, which recently received a 92 from famous wine critic Robert Parker.
After you’ve tasted the stunning array of Meerlust wines, you’ll move onto the next prominent wine farm: Kanonkop, ‘where the big guns roar’. Situated on the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in Stellenbosch, it confidently boasts some of South Africa’s most distinguished red wines. The Kanonkop Pinotage was one of The Platters Guide’s wines of the year in 2015 and continues to be a celebrated example of South African wine making.
From Kanonkop you will be delivered to the next winery, Muratie, a place of rich heritage and unsurpassed character. Truly, the tasting room is built into an old, disused cellar and is adorned with cobwebs and paintings of the previous owners mistress. Then it’s onto the last stop, Rust en Vrede. This was the first farm to specialise in the exclusive production of red wine only, and is another one of South Africa’s most well-respected red wine estates.
(Did you know: Rust en Vrede was chosen by President Nelson Mandela to be served at the Nobel Peace Prize dinner, it was the first South African red wine listed in the Top 100 Wines of the World and repeated this achievement for four consecutive years).
