With summer finally here, what better way to escape the bustle of the city and enjoy the warm weather than with a good, old-fashioned picnic? There are so many lovely picnic spots in Cape Town that you may find yourself spoilt for choice. Here’s our list of the top 10 places to plan your perfect summer picnic.
Kirstenbosch Gardens, Cape Town
This classic spot is a picnic staple for all Capetonians. The gardens are absolutely beautiful in the summer and the vibe is always relaxed. Kirstenbosch Gardens also has a wide range of entertainment; their popular sunset concerts every summer are a treat not to be missed. Pack your own food basket and wine and enjoy the fresh air and thriving atmosphere.
Cape Point Vineyards, Noordhoek
This picturesque wine estate nestled in tranquil Noordhoek is surrounded by views of the ocean and the mountains. They also produce a popular, unique Sauvignon Blanc that is praised worldwide for its ocean-influenced salinity and aromas. Picnic baskets for two can be pre-booked and are filled with fresh, satisfying bites as well as delectable desserts.
Mont Rochelle, Franschhoek
This serene spot spans over 4 hectares so there is plenty of space to explore and revel in nature. It’s a favourite for picnicking among locals, and remains in good condition thanks to its focus on environmental sustainability. The kitchen can arrange a well-stocked picnic basket with a bottle of wine (or two!) for relaxing under the summer sun.
Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate, Franschhoek
This historic winery offers a quaint, French-style picnic experience under majestic oak trees within the gorgeously manicured sculpture gardens of the estate. There is a picnic basket included from the Head Chef filled with delicious treats. Picnics can be booked from October through to April, but is closed for the colder winter period.
Beta Beach, Bakoven
If garden settings are not for you, a beach picnic may be right up your alley. Beta Beach is a tiny, secluded strip of sand in Cape Town, tucked behind a couple of bungalows just beyond Camps Bay. It’s a bit of a best kept secret, and the perfect place for some quiet time, a dip in the rock pools (if you can handle the ice-cold Atlantic water!) and a low-key picnic.
Spier Wine Farm, Stellenbosch
The idyllic setting of this wine farm makes for a truly dreamy day out. Spier has a strong focus on sustainability, so all food packaging is 100% biodegradable and compostable. Bring your own blanket to bask in the sunlight on their lawns, or a tablecloth for the tables in the garden. A bottle of Spier’s well-loved wine is included – naturally.
Hartenberg Wine Estate, Stellenbosch
Hartenberg is known for its down-to-earth atmosphere and endearingly unpretentious hospitality. The kitchen team provide a country picnic hamper packed to the brim with local produce and wine to share. Like Spier, its packaging is also 100% eco-friendly. Savour your meal on the lawns or take it with you along the estate’s popular wetland walk. Hartenberg is also home to some of South Africa’s leading Shiraz. Their Stork 15 bottle was recently awarded gold at the Sommelier Wine Awards and is a must-try if you visit the estate.
Mooiplaas Wine Estate, Stellenbosch
With its stately Manor House and rustic gardens, Mooiplaas feels like stepping back into a bygone era. They offer tasty, Victorian-style picnics and a gourmet cheese platter. Best of all, the picnic includes a wine tasting of six wines, with a glass of your favourite to enjoy for the rest of the afternoon.
Rhebokskloof Wine Estate, Paarl
At Rhebokskloof Wine Estate, you’ll find serene lakes, towing willow trees and lush fields that stretch out far into the distance. The vineyard’s architecture are luxurious examples of classic Cape Dutch and Victorian styles. This is one of Paarl’s most beautiful areas. The Estate is renowned for its high quality wines, all of which you can sample in their tasting room before the picnic. Rhebokskloof also prides itself on their locally produced olive oil. They also offer trampolines, jungle gyms and a free pony ride to keep children entertained, making this the ideal spot for a family outing.
Viljoensdrift, Robertson
Viljoensdrift is situated at the foot of the Breede River, south of the Elandsberg Mountains. While on your picnic you can take a boat out onto the river to fully absorb the stunning views, as well as engage in an informal complimentary wine tasting.
