The craft gin scene in Cape Town, and South Africa, in general, has been evolving rapidly over the last few years. There are now several distilleries and bars dedicated to the spirit dotted around the Cape with at least one or two in both Johannesburg and Durban. Local artisans are creating world-class examples of the liquor and use local ingredients like fynbos and indigenous fruit and spices to put their mark on their signature versions.
The scene may still be relatively young but it’s developing at a rapid rate and is well worth checking out when you are visiting Cape Town. The Gin Connoisseur tour takes you on a journey from inception to delivery, from distillery to counter top and everything in between. You’ll visit working distilleries and meet the enterprising owners and distillers themselves and hear the colourful stories of how they got into the trade to begin with. Some of the producers you will meet are driving the industry and setting the bar high when it comes to quality production.
Making gin is a nuanced practice and requires enormous amounts of patience, dedication and skill. Meeting the producers is like meeting an artist in their studio and getting a peek inside what is going on inside their mind. Understanding the process will add even more value to the way you experience a gin & tonic (or any cocktail!) going forward. Not only will you learn about gin but you’ll get to experience the city of Cape Town through a very unique lens and visit parts of the city that many travellers never see. Taking you truly ‘off-the-beaten-track’ and gaining you insider access, this tour is for those with an interest in the craft movement in South Africa and with a spirit for adventure.
Included in the experience are stops along the way that allow you to see more of Cape Town than just the inside of a distillery. The itinerary is relatively flexible so you can make requests on the day but if there are specific sights you’d like to see along the way just let us know and we’ll see how we can build them into your itinerary beforehand (please note that this may incur an additional cost to the advertised rate).
